S4J helping stations along the Comrades route was life giving!

Here are a few testimonies of how the 2011 Sudan4Jesus (S4J) team of runners experienced the four S4J helping points along the route. Also read the remarkable testimony of Christa, one of the runners who had a REALLY touch race, but highly valued the help along the route.

The Dutton family before sunrise at S4J helping point 1 during Comrades 2011

  • "I did not make much use of the bags, but just the mere fact that there was someone who could encourage you made it absolutely worth my while. I’ll plan the content of my bags better in 2012."

  • "The friendly faces blessed me!"

  • “Definitely! I’ll have a better idea what to put in the bags at the next Comrades, so that it’s not a duplication of what’s available along the Comrades route."

  • "Oh yes! I could not wait to see our people along the route!"

Here is quite a testimony by one of the 2011 Sudan4Jesus runners. Christa also shortly before the Comrades took part in the 600 km Fire Trails run from Pretoria to Musina. Here is her testimony:

"Yes, definitely! I was very excited when I saw Point 1 from a distance at Pinetown. It felt so wonderful that someone cared for me! I really looked forward in getting to my bag. I needed my plasters, game powder and energy bar; because I was bumped over just as we started running on the highway at Durban. I fell really badly and my lost my cold drink bottle and energy bar in the process. I was therefor so depended on the Sudan4Jesus helping point to get me going again.

Blackie’s help at Point 2 was life-giving, because I was really hungry for the goodies in my bag and I desperately needed a pat on the back to get my going again. Unfortunately I got nauseous at Botha’s Hill and that feeling never stopped for the rest of the race!!

I felt so ashamed that I felt so nauseous and weak at Point 3. I did not even see Norman until he stood right in front of me. At Point 4 I could not even appreciate the Agape love of Mostert and Blackie, so much so that I did not even wanted to see the contents of my bag! That was a HUGE mistake on my part, because in my bag I had some ENO (I want to kick myself that I didn’t drink it!) and REHIDRATE. If I asked, I’m convinced that Norman, Mostert and Blackie would have encouraged and prayed for me. (We prayed for you Christa, even though you did not ask or know about it then!) My legs were fine; it’s just that I felt very weak and dehydrated from vomiting too much.

Thanks to Mostert that came and fetch me along the route and ran with me for a while, just like in our weekly time trials at Zita Park!

Rest assure, the Sudan4Jesus helping points were of great value to me during the 2011 Comrades. I also think that your positioning along the route was just fine!”

Helping our team of runners on race day

You just about had to run the Comrades Marathon already to understand the magnitude of it. It's not far; it's VERY far! It's not long, it's a VERY long almost 12 hour run for the majority of runners who complete the race within the cut-off time. As a support team, we want to give the Sudan4Jesus runners the best possible support on race day.

So next week we're having a meeting with the runners to discuss how best we could assist them on race day. We gave them something to think about in preparation for race day:

Dear Friends of Sudan4Jesus,

I trust that you are all experiencing the life in Christ in it's fullness; the Lord is good, His love endures forever!

Louise Jacobs supported by Blackie during a race
On Tuesday evening at 7pm we are getting together at Norman's home to discuss some practical arrangements for your Sudan4Jesus run at Comrades. We would like to assist you in any way to make the day very special and to see all your hard training the past year come to a victorious conclusion.

The main focus of the Sudan4Jesus run is to raise money for the Lord's work in Sudan through the ministry of the Sudan Support Network (SSNet). The focus is on the Lord and the expansion of His kingdom and through Sudan4Jesus we want to be available for His purpose.

Here are some things we would like to discuss, please feel free to bring your ideas for discussion:

1) Meeting together on the day before Comrades; Saturday 28 May
2) Seconding points along the route
3) Teams to man the seconding points
4) How we can assist you at the seconding points
5) Banners at each seconding point
6) Goodie bags for all your supplements
7) Sponsors for Sudan4Jesus; how to raise sponsors.

We are looking forward to meet with you, please make a special effort to attend.

Blessings,

BS

Amazing commitment!

It is so amazing to see how they run!

I just love this Sudan4Jesus [S4J] team. It's NOT always easy. Staying the distance in preparing, running and fundraising takes a HUGE commitment from every member of the team.

Recently a couple of the S4J team completed the Elands Valley marathon AND the Loskop ultra marathon in preparation for the Comrades Marathon taking place on 29 May 2011. There are only 38 days left to the gruelling 89 km / 56 mile Comrades Marathon. It is called the ultimate human race for VERY good reason.

I remember so vividly running the Comrades last year and combining that with a fundraiser for ministry. It's all about getting the good news about Jesus to those whove have not yet heard the message. It took me 11 hours and 50 minutes to complete the disctance. This is a seriously LONG race.

Roald le Roux (left on the picture), Louise Jacobs (middle) and Willie van Staden (right) runs. Looking very good, still early in the race.

Roald and Louise are "attached" to one another with a rubber band. Louise is blind, yet runs like the wind.

One of the very funny things that happened during the marathon, is that helpers actually thought Louise is helping Roald. Helpers made comments about "how amazing that blond woman is helping the blind man."

These three are just part of a phenomenal team of people. Ordinary people used in FANTASTIC ways by God. Sudan4Jesus!!!

Willie taking a lot of strain (pain). Yet, only a week or so later he did the 50 km (almost 32 mile) Loskop ultra marathon.

Here is the interesting thing. Because the S4J team has the love of Christ for one another, Willie's fellow team members reached out to him with encouragement and advise. He did MUCH better during the Loskop ultra marathon. This gives great hope for his chance to complete the Comrades Marathon on 29 May! Go Willie!!!

He's doing it again!

The Lord is amazing. Just received a payment of R10,000.

Today, jointly, donations and commtments push the fund to just more than R40,000.

No doubt, the LORD'S amazing! Praise YOU Jesus!

Wednesday, 16 March 2011

Oh my, it's flooding in! Praise the LORD!

The Lord is so great! Praise His Name!

Right after reporting about the promise of R10,000 (about $1500 US) minutes ago, we discovered that a further R3,500 (about $450 US) has been paid into the Sudan4Jesus fund.

Praise the Lord God Almighty!

With promises and what has been received, the Sudan4Jesus fund now stands on about R28,500 (about $4,000 US). It's still quite a distance to our faith target of R250,000 (about $35,000 US) by the end of August 2011.

What we would like to see is that through finances, many people would have an opportunity to bless at least some of those working in Sudan to bring the wonderful message of Jesus Christ and His love to where this has not yet been heard in Sudan.

Until ALL have heard in Sudan!

The Lord doubles the Sudan4Jesus fund in a day

We serve such a mighty God. Up and until yesterday the fund stood on just more than R10,000 (about $1500). This morning we received a promise of a R10,000 donation from a highly credible source. Praise the Lord. That money is promised for when the stock markets look better - the markets took a HUGE dip with what happened in Japan in the past few days.

So: pray for Japan and pray for the stock markets. It's influencing the Sudan4Jesus fund.

Just thought you could do with some good news.

Roald's testimony - a story of hope

Louise Jacobs

by Roald Le Roux - when handing to Louise an amazing donation on 19 February 2011

"I think I speak on behalf of all of us that have come to know you, Louise, since late last year, that you are a great inspiration to us all. The passion and commitment you show in attaining your goal, running your first Comrades 2011, your interaction and jokes with us at the time trials and during races, and the ease with which you have slotted in to this newly discovered sport of road running, has on a number of occasions lead to us completely forgetting that you are unable to see. We are not the only ones that have mistaken you as being able to see all that is happening around you, as you so aptly pointed out to a marshal at one of your races late last year when you reminded him after overshooting a turning point in the race - “Speak to me! Can’t you see that I cannot see”!

And it is on this issue I wish to comment -“Can’t you see that I cannot see”! We have come to know that you are able to find your way around most of the hustle and bustle at the start; to follow the route well once the sun is up, and that you are able to keep a stiff consistent pace, even during your first 42,2km. All this in spite of the fact that you cannot see, the stiff pace – a clear indication of your determination referred to earlier, and the inability to spot distance boards is a recipe for blowing on a race, as you are unable to feed off the information that is displayed by most running watches - are you running too fast or too slow; are you running outside your heart rate zone, what distance have you covered, what pace should you run at to reach the end of the race before the cut off time.

I was certain that it would be easy to locate such a product via the Internet. Almost all well known watch brands, and GPS/Watch Combinations offered all or more of the required features – but none with the most crucial feature we required – vox communication of all the displayed information on the face of the watch. In desperation I even tried Bendix, manufacturers of top end aircraft instrumentation such as, Radar, Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and the likes, most of which come standard with a Vox function – with no success.
It was at one of the time trials around the start of the year, after voicing my frustration to one of the members at Run/Walk for Life, who recalled reading an article in the December issue of Running of a newly launched product of this kind.

At the following time trial I was given a copy, and lo and behold, there it was – The Adidas I-Trainer. I could not wait for the next day, when I contacted Adidas South Africa, the official distributors of Adidas in South Africa. After speaking to their Sales Desk who confirmed the existence of the product, I was transferred to Ragna Nilssen, Senior Category Manager - Individual Sport at Adidas South Africa.

I was elated to learn that the newly launched Adidas i-Trainer boasted every one of the features Louise needed. I needed definite confirmation of this, and asked a third time if the required features were available, after which Ragna asked me in what application this product was to be used in. I then for the first time during our conversation told her of Louise and the constraints and challenges she faces familiarising herself with the information displayed on runners watches. I then also read her Louise’ letter after completing her first 42,2 published in the This and That.

While reading the letter I thought I had lost the call as Ragna went dead quiet, and when I asked if she was still on the line, she replied that she was in tears.

Ragna offered to forward what I understood to be a loan unit, which she said Louise could try to see if it satisfied her needs. It was only when I asked her within what time she required the unit back, that Ragna pointed out to me that I misunderstood her offer – Adidas would donate the watch to Louise. I was speechless......humbled and without words. The next day I received the following e-mail from Ragna, confirming the donation.:

Hi Roald
Dankie vir jou mail man. [Thanks for your mail]. En baie lekker om betrokke te raak hier.. [Great to get involved here]. Kan jy dalk asb vir my by haar man uitvind wat haar skoen grote is (UK sizing) en ook of sy pronate of ’n neutral runner is? ..[Could you please find out from her husband what her shoe size is and also if she pronate or is a neutral runner?] Ek dink Louise is regtig merkwaardig en sal graag ’n paar skoene vir haar ook insluit. Sy is regtig ’n inspirasie! [I think Louise is really amazing and want to include shoes for her. She's really an inspiration!]
Ragna Nilssen
Sr Category Manager - Individual Sport

To my astonishment it contained a second paragraph where Ragna informed me that she had decided to, over and above the i -Trainer, donate a full Adidas Kit to Louise, consisting of a pair of Adidas Running Shoes, Tights, Arm Pouch, Climacool T-shirt, Socks and Crop Top with built in heart sensor.

At this stage I could hardly contain myself. I decided that the presence of a larger group than the time trial group would make the occasion and surprise level that much more special when handing the hamper to Louise. On Friday afternoon prior to the Bronkhorstpsruit I received a call from Louise, confirming travelling with me to the race the following morning. At the end of the conversation she again discussed to need for such a product, as well as the need to get a new pair of running shoes within the next 6 weeks. Louise, it was such a privilege to share God’s goodness and favour fulfilled, right here, in front of my eyes with you and all present at the start of the Bronkhorstpsruit 32km, and not even having asked for it!

We all, and in particular the Zita Park Time Trial regulars wish you a wonderful and blessed training time in preparation for Comrades 2011.

In the words of Tim Noakes I conclude:
“You may suspect that the Comrades is different, but at the start, you are certain. The atmosphere carnival. We are an eccentric family doing for one day what we like best, and no matter how humble the results, for twelve hours we will be loved and applauded for it. From dawn until the sun sets in Pietermaritzburg, we are the children of the road, to be succoured, encouraged, praised, protected. Today there can only be one outcome – each runner a winner, each a hero God made a home in the sky for the sun, it comes out in the morning.....like an athlete eager to run a race.

So on May the 29th, some time between 05h30am and 05h30pm, you will find Louise and all of us, in mind, if not in body somewhere on the Old Main Road between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, secure in the knowledge that this is the year. This is Louise’ and our year when we will finally defeat the coward within and so commence a heroes life.”
